Roger Lamar Smith, 70, of Springfield, went to be with the Lord in his home on Tuesday morning, August 21, 2018 at 7:08 am, after many long years struggling with multiple serious illnesses. He was born in Clark County to Russell and Emma (Corbin) Smith in 1947. He married Carolyn Marie (Hines) in 1967 and was drafted into the US Army shortly thereafter. He spent 1 year in Vietnam serving as a Field Radio Mechanic with the 1st Infantry Division "Big Red One". Roger retired fromWright-Patterson Air Force Base in 2001 as a Mechanical Engineering Technician, after completing 32 years of service.
Roger is survived by his wife of almost 51 years, Carolyn, their four children: Sonia (Chris) Lindner of Newark, OH, Phillip (Linda) of Springfield, OH, Michael (Amy) of Florence, AL, and Christopher of Springfield, OH; seven grandchildren: Travis (Lea) Lindner, Jessica Lindner, Michael Smith, Jr, Brian Smith, Darren Smith, Abbey Hogue, and Mary Claire Smith; one great-grandson: Killian Hogue; brothers Jerry (Linda) Smith, Ernie Smith, Dale (Wanda) Smith, and sister Janet (Ralph) Pamer; and many nephews and nieces. He was a member of Grace Missionary Baptist Church of Springfield, and former member of Hulon Baptist Church of Batesburg Leesville, SC where he lovingly served as deacon. Roger loved God, family, and his country, fishing, playing and singing bluegrass music. He loved to talk about God, politics, and cars. Unfortunately, he was never able to take a ride in the 1965 Chevy Malibu SS that he and son, Phil, were restoring. He was loved dearly, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Services to honor Roger will be Thursday at 7:00PM in the Grace Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Orbie Estep officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be begin at 5:00PM. Graveside services will be at 10:15AM Friday in the Dayton National Cemetery.
