Martha Ann Wanninger

Martha Ann (Pitt) Wanninger, age 86, of Springfield, Ohio, passed away on September 9,2026. She was born in Springfield on November 26, 1939, to the late Harold and Catherine (Coffey) Pitt. Martha became a registered nurse and worked in both Cincinnati and Springfield, including at Mercy Medical Center and Mercy Home Health. Later in life, she earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Wittenberg University.

Martha had a lifelong love of animals and was rarely without a cat- or several- in her care. During her retirement years she volunteered at her church and at the hospital. Martha also opened her home to senior cats from the Clark County Animal Welfare League. She was a talented artist who enjoyed drawing and painting, putting her creativity to use as a Sunday school teacher in Cincinnati and in decorating her family home. Martha was a member of Delta Chi Sigma, a charitable sorority whose activities included supporting the Arthritis Foundation.

She is survived by her son, Joe Wanninger of Cincinnati; daughter, Suzanne Merrill of Aspen, Colorado; and sister-in-law, Trudy Pitt. In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Pitt.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am on Friday, October 2, 2026, at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Springfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clark County Animal Welfare League.
