On Sunday, March 8, Lucinda Rose “Jennie” McGhee passed away quietly and peacefully in her sleep.
Jennie was born to Edwin H. Hicks and Rosa (Little) Hicks and grew up in LaFollette, Tennessee, a place she loved deeply. Though life eventually took her elsewhere, Tennessee always remained close to her heart. She made many trips back through the years and often spoke fondly of those visits, wishing she could make the journey one more time.
Jennie was very close to her siblings and carried those relationships with her throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Silas Hicks, Susan “Susie” (Hicks) Collins, Icey Hicks, Paul Hicks, Virginia “Ginger” Lee (Hicks) Bunch, Edwin “Eddie” Hicks, and her son, Randy McGhee. She is survived by her brother Carl (Margaret) Hicks, sister Judith “Judy” (Bob) Swanton, and former daughter-in-law, Pam Sweatt.
In 1953, Jennie married the love of her life, Bob McGhee. Together, they built a life filled with hard work, community involvement, and deep devotion to one another. Over the years, they were active in their community through various civic organizations and business ventures. Jennie cared for Bob lovingly through his final days until his passing in 2008, and she carried his memory with her every day after.
Jennie was a proud and loving mother to her sons, Bobby McGhee and Randy McGhee. She was immensely proud of her boys; their school portraits hung on her wall for decades, long after they had grown up and started families of their own. She treasured her family and welcomed her daughter-in-law, Pamela Jean, with the same love she gave her own children.
She adored being a grandmother and cherished her grandchildren, Adam (Nicole) McGhee, Roxanne McGhee, Amy (Ronnie) Stephens, and Justin McGhee. Jennie never missed an opportunity to show off their photos or tell anyone who would listen how much she loved them. Her family continued to grow through her great-grandchildren, Adisson McGhee, Zander McGhee, Jaxon McGhee, Makayla Stephens, Madyson Stephens, Blake Stephens, Weston McGhee, and Brynlee McGhee, as well as one great-great-grandchild, Ella.
Jennie had a gift for making people feel welcome. Anyone who visited her home quickly learned they would not leave hungry or thirsty. If she noticed someone sitting too long without a drink, she would smile and say, “Get ya something to drink.” Her home was a place where people felt comfortable, cared for, and always welcome.
Jennie also had a well-known habit of keeping things — everything. If something was useful, beautiful, or simply might come in handy someday, Jennie found a place for it. Her collections were a reflection of a life that noticed little things and held onto them.
She loved traveling, finding a good bargain, and spending time with friends. She never turned down a trip to the casino and took more photographs than anyone could possibly count. She was also a devoted pet owner who loved her dog and cat dearly.
Jennie will be remembered for her kindness, her stories, and the love she shared with those around her.
Her family will honor her life with a memorial service at a later date.
