Karl "Fred" Mcatee, Jr.

December 17, 1935 — January 23, 2019

Karl "Fred" McAtee, Jr., 83, of Springfield passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019 following a brief illness. He was born December 17, 1935 in Parkersburg, WV, the son of Karl F., Sr. and Edna (Nay) McAtee. Fred was a 1955 graduate of Springfield High School and served in the United States Army in Germany during the Korean War. He began a long and distinguished career with the Springfield Police Department as a foot patrolman and retired in in 1986 as a Lieutenant, with numerous commendations. Fred had an outgoing personality and made friends easily. He had many interests as a sportsman, hunting and fishing, bowling in two leagues, and golfing at Snyder and Reid Park, where he "volunteered" his services. He had a sharp eye for golf balls on the course and collected thousands of them. His friends joked that "if a ball wasn’t rolling, it belonged to Fred." He served as President of the Capt. Francis J. Shaffer Lodge 72, of the Fraternal Order of Police, and was a member of Masonic Lodge and Ingomar Lodge #610, Knights of Pythias. Fred was a great husband, father, grandpa, great grandpa and great great grandpa, and is survived by his children Kelly (Cheryl) McAtee of Springfield and Jeni (Jeff) Cook of Plain City, OH; four grandchildren Jen (Doug) Six, Ashley McAtee, Joey (Colleen) Runyan and Shae Cook; great grandchildren Lindsey and Cole Six, and Jonah Garvin; a great great grandson Finley "Denny"; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of fifty years Shirley McAtee in 2009; sisters Janet and Nancy McAtee, and Teri Gansheimer; and a granddaughter Amber McAtee. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 AM – 12 Noon in RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. The service to honor Fred’s life will begin with the Fraternal Order of Police at 12 Noon in the Memorial Home and burial to follow in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made in Fred’s name to the Capt. Francis J. Shaffer Lodge 72, Fraternal Order of Police, Attn: K. Hopper, 3077 Old Mill Rd., Springfield, OH 45502.
