John Bishop Vigus

August 5, 1940 — January 2, 2024

John Bishop Vigus, 83, of Enon, died on Jan. 2, 2024, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and reared in San Diego, California. Following a peripatetic career that took him across the world, John spent his final three decades in Ohio after meeting the love of his life, Teresa Macy Vigus, while installing a crane system for Litton at Grimes Manufacturing in Urbana.

A great adventurer who accomplished many things in his life, John served with the U.S. Army in Korea and elsewhere from 1959 to 1962 and, later, worked as a tracking station technician for the 1968 Manned Apollo VII Mission in Spain. An early computer adopter and ace electrical engineer and programmer, John was a lifelong sailboat enthusiast and perennial tinkerer who taught himself to make wine, yogurt, robots, 3-D printers, and anything else that piqued his curiosity.

He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph E. and Bessie Mae Vigus, and a brother, Joseph Harry Vigus. In addition to his wife, Terry, John leaves behind a son, Matt Gleason, grandchildren Allie and Adam Gleason, and a host of Macy in-laws who will miss his dry wit. The family wishes to thank Hospice of Dayton, special nieces Liza Mercer and Vikki Vigus, and Spring Lake Circle neighbors who never failed to lend support.

A life member of the Enon V.F.W. Post 8437, John was also an avid swimmer at the Fairborn Y.M.C.A. for many years, up until the complications of his C.O.P.D. prevented him from working out. He would advise you to never pick up that first cigarette.

Contributions in John’s memory may be made to Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton: 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420. A celebration of life is planned for the spring.
