Helen H. Carter

Helen H. Carter, age 99, of Springfield, passed away peacefully Friday, September 22, 2017 at home. She was born September 16, 1918 in Pickaway County, Ohio, and four weeks after her birth her mother died in the flu epidemic of 1918. Helen and her three siblings were raised by aunts and uncles living in the Pickaway County area. She was adopted by C.E. and Della Mae Hill and lived a happy childhood in Williamsport, Ohio. She attended White Cross School of Nursing in Columbus, Ohio (later Riverside School of Nursing) and received an RN degree. She practiced her profession at Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Mercy Hospital in Springfield, and Planned Parenthood in Springfield. She married her childhood sweetheart, Harry H. Carter, also of Williamsport, and as he pursued his teaching career the couple lived in several places around central Ohio, including Mechanicsburg and Springfield where they finally retired. The family was active for many years in the Springfield community, particularly at High Street United Methodist Church as well as in Springfield Kiwanis and kiwaniannes. Helen and Harry spent most of their retirement years working their "bucket list" of travel goals, visiting places throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. She is preceded in death by her husband and her son Richard W. Carter. She is survived by daughter Judy (Dale) Coon of Leesburg, Florida; son Tom (Susan) Carter of Upper Arlington, Ohio; daughter June (David) Collins of Springfield; and daughter-in-law Linda Carter of Orient, Ohio; as well as nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. At her request, there will be a brief private family only memorial service at a later date. The family wishes to thank the women of Comfort Keepers Home Care for the assistance they provided these past few months, thus allowing Mom to remain at home. Our mother was a kind and gentle person, always optimistic, and had a terrific sense of humor. She had a wonderful 99 year run, and we are so lucky to have had her.
