Eileen (Dick) Thuma passed away at home Saturday, February 3, after complications from surgery at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her husband Gale Thuma in 1995, and her son Master Sergeant David Thuma in 1998. Two years ago she lost a great-grandson Ronnie Jones Jr. of New Carlisle. Eileen was born in Miami County to Harold and Lena (Jacobs) Dick. She was a long-time resident of the area in addition to spending her winters in Florida. Eileen was one of six children: Isabel Preston, Richard Dick, Faith Leffler, Lois Aldrich and Donald Dick; with Donald being the only remaining sibling. He resides in Huber Heights. She is survived by three of her children; G. Wayne Thuma and his wife Maxine of New Carlisle; Sonnie Fissel and her husband Steve of Springfield; and Beckie Mason and her husband Rich of Portland, Oregon. In addition to her children, Eileen has eight grandkids, twelve great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. During WW2, Eileen helped make bullets for the War Effort. She was remembered for saying that although she knew the bullets would hurt someone else, they would save "our" boys. She was a member of both the American Legion and VFW Women’s Auxiliaries, and a member of McKendree United Methodist Church. She was also a GOLD STAR MOTHER, earned due to the death of her son in service to our country while in Africa. Eileen will be fondly remembered for her love of flowers, feeding the many birds that enjoy her backyard and visiting with her family, whom she so enjoyed. A memorial gathering of family and friends will be Friday from 3-7 PM in TROSTEL, CHAPMAN, DUNBAR & FRALEY FUNERAL HOME. A memorial service to honor Eileen will be Saturday at 10:00 AM in the funeral home with burial of ashes following in New Carlisle Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.trostelchapman.com.
