Dannie J. Wheeler

December 16, 1947 — May 13, 2026

New Carlisle

Dannie J. Wheeler, age 78, entered his heavenly home on May 13, 2026, following a five-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born on December 16, 1947, in Blaine, Kentucky, to the late Joy (Evans) Wheeler and Jess W. Wheeler. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Jo Wheeler, and a brother, James Ellis Wheeler. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Debra (Short) Wheeler, daughter, Traci Ann Sisco (Kevin), and grandson, Nathaniel, who reside in Smithville, Missouri. Other family members are his sisters Shirley Parker of Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Sue Boyer (Robert) of Enon, OH, Diane Smith, who resides in Clinton, Tennessee, and sister-in-law, Susan (Welter) Wheeler, who resides in Monroe, North Carolina. Dan also had numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he dearly loved.

Dan served honorably as an Artillery Surveyor in the United States Army during the Vietnam War with the 8th Battalion, 17th Artillery from 1968 to 1969. His decorations included the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Upon returning from the war, he married Debra Short, and together they had two beautiful daughters, Traci Ann and Rebecca Jo. They have lived their entire life in New Carlisle, OH, where they have attended Crossroad Church for the last 35 years. Dan loved the Lord and his church family and served faithfully as a deacon there for many of those years.

He had a distinguished career with General Motors, where he worked for 31 years before retiring in June 2006. He was an excellent provider for his family and very generous to everyone he loved.

In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Cleveland Browns, but the thing he loved the most was gardening. From flowers to half-runner green beans, Dan could grow it all. Dan and Deb’s home was filled with love and warmth, and people were always welcomed with good food and hugs.

Dealing with Parkinson’s Dementia, the last few years were very challenging for Dan, and certainly the last few months in particular were very difficult. He was always so grateful for the love and support they both received through this trying time for our family and friends. Many times, throughout the day, he would just drop his head and give thanks for the goodness of God in his life. He knew for sure that he was blessed beyond measure.

Funeral services for Dan will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Crossroad Church, 9903 W. National Rd. New Carlisle, OH. Burial to follow at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made.
