Richard L. Dunbar
Owner, Funeral Director

Funeral Director Richard L. Dunbar is the owner and President of the funeral home firm. Rick grew up in Springfield along with his three brothers: Mark, David, and Bruce, and his parents, Steve Dunbar, a well-known area photographer, and Marge Dunbar, former manager of the Springfield City Schools Credit Union. A 1972 graduate of Springfield South High School, Rick competed in Track and Field, and set countywide records in track that remained unbroken for more than two decades. While attending Wright State University, Rick began working part-time at Austin Richards Memorial Home. He then won a scholarship to the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, where he was a starter on the college basketball team. Rick also excelled academically, and graduated with honors in 1977. He returned to Springfield, and continued his career in funeral service with Austin Richards. After Mr. Richards’ death in 1978, funeral director Fred Raff assumed ownership of the firm, renaming it Austin Richards & Raff Memorial Home. In 1980, Rick was named partner in the firm. Shortly thereafter, Austin Richards & Raff Memorial Home merged with the Trostel, Chapman, Dunbar & Fraley Funeral Home in New Carlisle, owned by Ted Chapman. In 1989, Fred Raff and Ted Chapman retired, and Rick was named President of the funeral home firm.

Rick has been married since 1977 to Anne Guyton Dunbar, who also works in the firm. Although they have no children of their own, the Dunbar’s are blessed to be very close with all members of their families, especially their 13 nieces and nephews, and their beloved dog, Sophia – all of whom bring great joy to their lives.

The Dunbar’s attend Christ Episcopal Church. Rick serves on the Board of Directors for the Springfield Kiwanis Club, and is a member of GODA Club, St. Andrews Lodge #619 F & AM, Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield Country Club, Springfield Chamber of Commerce, and is past vice-president of the National Road Corvette Club. He is also a member of the Ohio Funeral Director’s Association, the National Funeral Director’s Association, Miami Valley Funeral Professionals, and is a member by invitation of the honorary organization, Selected Independent Funeral Homes, where he has served on the Ethics Committee. Membership in Selected Independent Funeral Homes is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon anyone serving in the funeral profession.

When he has any spare time, Rick enjoys playing golf, boating, water skiing, bowling, NASCAR, hiking, swimming, working in his yard, and studying American Military History.

Rick’s expertise covers every aspect of funeral service, and he derives great satisfaction from assisting families during one of the most difficult times in their lives.

“Each person is unique, so each funeral should be unique, as well. We help each family personalize their loved one’s funeral service, so that it will be a memorable, meaningful, and comforting experience for the family and friends of the deceased. Due to our commitment to excellence, Richards, Raff & Dunbar Memorial Home and Trostel, Chapman, Dunbar & Fraley Funeral Home stand out above all other funeral homes in the area. We offer the best services, a wide range of choices, and have beautiful and comfortable surroundings for visitations and funerals. Our staff is well - trained, sensitive, and dedicated to funeral service. In addition, I try to learn from every family that we serve, so I can find ways to improve and fine-tune our service.”
